National Hazing Symposium

The Gordie Foundation is proud to sponsor the keynote speakers at Hazing Prevention.org's 2008 National Hazing Symposium.  The symposium will be held December 3rd in Denver Colorado in conjunction with the Association of Fraternity Advisors Annual Meeting.  The symposium is a day-long examination of research, theories, and practical implications for addressing the problem of hazing.

Middlebury College enhanced their National GORDIEday events with a presentation by national speaker on hazing, Travis Apgar - October 22nd.  Their events concluded with a special screening on October 23rd of HAZE open to all students and the public. The screening was hosted by the Health and Wellness Education Dept and held at Dana Auditorium.

As part of their National GORDIEday programming, Trinity College hosted a special screening of HAZE with a brief introduction by Gordie's sister and Trinity freshman, Lily Lanahan.  The screening was followed by discussion groups on the issues covered in the film.

HAZE participated in the 16th Annual Hamptons International Film Festival in East Hampton New York on October 17, 2008.  The festival is committed to exhibiting films that express fresh voices and differing global perspectives, with the hope that these programs will enlighten audiences, provide invaluable exposure for filmmakers and present inspired entertainment for all.

University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland
The University of Maryland hosted a special screening of HAZE sponsored by the Panhellenic Association, the Interfraternity Council, and the United Greek Council for all Greeks with a special focus on those new to the Greek system.  In addition to the screening, UMD had individuals from Watt Imagination, the production team behind HAZE, speaking to the group.

The University of Texas at Austin Interfraternity Council hosted Mr. Lanahan and a special screening of HAZE for students involved in Greek Life or other student organizations.  Attending the video conference was a required part of the new member education for joining a fraternity in the council.  Many of the Greek organizations will be making HAZE part of their new member education.

SMU hosted special screenings of HAZE during Parent's Weekend.  Parents and students were invited to view this feature documentary on the dangers of alcohol and hazing on college campuses across the country.

GORDIEday at Salve Regina University
Newport, Rhode Island
In cooperation with The Gordie Foundation, the Salve Regina University’s Alumni Office, Student Life, and Residential Life sponsored Gordie Day on September 17, 2008. The event hosted a variety of alcohol prevention exercises as well as a simulated fire truck, the opportunity to wear “beer goggles” and try to navigate your way through an apartment on fire. There was food, free gifts, prizes, and more. Throughout campus there were reminders of the dangers of alcohol poisoning along with remembrances of those students lost due to alcohol poisoning on college campuses.  The day concluded with a presentation by Will Lanahan, Gordie's cousin, a screening of HAZE, and a round table discussion group with Resident Assistants.

In conjunction with their Hazing Prevention Week, TCU Fraternity & Sorority Life hosted a special screening of HAZE to over 1,000 TCU students.  During this event, The Gordie Foundation passed out educational materials and registered new members for the TCU COT chapter.

The 4th Annual Circle of Trust Kick Off Reception

Representatives and supporters of many of our Circle of Trust chapters gathered together at the New York Yacht Club in New York City for The 4th Annual Kick Off Reception. The evening included fellowship, networking, and idea sharing about increasing alcohol and hazing awareness on college campuses across the country.   We thank each of you that were able to attend.

Week of Remembrance
University of Colorado, Boulder Colorado
University of Colorado Boulder's student organization G.O.R.D (Guidelines of Responsible Drinking) hosted a week of events focused on the dangers of binge drinking and alcohol poisoning.  The event included a display of 6800 flags in the Norlin Quad - representing the students lives that have been lost to alcohol related causes since Gordie's death in 2004.  The week of events concluded with a dinner and panel discussion on September 17th, including various University of Colorado offices / departments, discussing what changes have been made to alter the drinking culture following Gordie's death.

Nearly 1000 SMU students gathered by the flagpole on the SMU campus for a special screening of the full length feature documentary HAZE.  After the film, students said it was "relatable", "balanced", and "inspirational".

Presidential Leadership Award Presented

The Gordie Foundation was pleased to partner with Outside the Classroom to present Dr. Jonathan C. Gibralter, President of Frostburg State University with the Presidential Leadership Award, a national honor recognizing his success in promoting a vibrant intellectual and social campus climate that de-emphasizes the role of alcohol.  Dr. Gibralter stands out as a shining example of the real work being done to address the perennial, up-at-night issue for college campuses across the country.  The Presidential Leadership Award aims to highlight and congratulate college and university presidents who have demonstrated kenn vision and innovative leadership by developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy that not only addresses the specific scientific educational needs of individuals but also seeks to bring about change at the institutional, community, and public policy levels.  The award caries a $50,000 donation made to the institution in the name of the recipient of which The Gordie Foundation contributed $25,000.

Among the most profound responsibilities of a college or university president is to help create a safe environment in which students can develop their intellectual potential. The Gordie Foundation proudly co-sponsored the 2008 Presidential Leadership Award. This award recognized one such president for his or her success in promoting a vibrant intellectual and social climate that deemphasizes the role of alcohol. The recipient of the award will be honored with a $50,000 donation to his / her institution.  The winner of the 2008 award was President of Frostburg State University, Dr Jonathan C. Gibralter.

Virginia Commonwealth University hosted VCU Pride on August 20, 2008.  The event was for all incoming Freshman and VCU athletes.  VCU Pride focused on changing the attitudes and expectations of student athletes and included the distribution of several educational pieces from The Gordie Foundation as well as a viewing of the HAZE trailer.

The Northwest Alcohol Conference funding the Boise Police Activities League Youth Alcohol Programs was held in Boise Idaho, July 17-18.  The conference was designed as "A Place Where Individuals and Groups Can Work Together and Learn from Each Other to Improve the Quality of Life in Their Communities through Education and Enforcement."  Gordie Foundation educational materials were distributed at the event.

The competition included a swimsuit competition, talent section, and a question / answer session. This event also contained a raffle of GORDIEgear items. All proceeds of the raffle and ticket sales were for The Gordie Foundation and the Union College COT chapter.

Brothers of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity distributed hundreds of GORDIEcheck cards and koozies to students at the University of Texas vs. University of Nebraska football game. These wallet-sized cards and koozies each display the signs of alcohol poisoning and the importance of calling for help if your friends are in need.

On this day, 1700 green Gordie flags were placed on campus representing the over 1700 student lives lost each year to alcohol related deaths. In addition, hundreds of GORDIE bracelets were distributed to students.

Jane Rea Navin, Executive Director of The Gordie Foundation, presented during the junior and senior alcohol awareness assembly at Woodrow Wilson High School. Gordie Bailey was one of the 1400 students that die each year from alcohol related causes. To raise alcohol awareness through the promotion of dialog between parents, students, and educators, The Gordie Foundation established GORDIEawareness Week. During this week, 1400 flags were displayed on Molina’s campus (a campus of over 2500 students) to illustrate the number of students lives lost each year to alcohol. In addition, GORDIEbracelets were distributed to students.

Cape Fear Academy GORDIEawareness Week

Cape Fear Academy incorporated GORDIEawareness week into their advisory program for the entire Upper School (grades 9-12) during the week of the Junior/Senior Prom. During a Monday assembly, advisors read information sent by the Gordie Foundation. Each student then received a GORDIEcheck card. On the way out of the assembly, students grabbed a handful of the flags and met the rest of the student body on the front lawn of the Upper School to place all 1400 flags in the yard to be displayed during the week.

The Gordie Foundation was proud to sponsor and participate in the 2007 APPLE Conference. The NCAA, in partnership with the University of Virginia, established the APPLE Conference to assist schools in promoting student athlete health and wellness by empowering teams of student athletes and administrators to create an institution-specific action plan. Through these conferences, The Gordie Foundation was able to network and visit with other alcohol education professionals as well as college athletes from across the country.

In Gordie's Memory, a CU Hug!
Boulder, Colorado
In an attempt to break a world record, students at the University of Colorado participated in the “Gordie Hug” at Folsom Field, during the second quarter of the football game against Arizona State on Saturday, September 16. Approximately 50,000 in attendance were asked to hug the people standing around them, in memory of Gordie Bailey and honoring the “hug club” which Bailey formed at his high school to promote unity. Following the game, 28,000 GORDIEcheck cards were handed out by G.O.R.D which was formed at UC Boulder following Gordie's death.

Organized by CAMPUSSPEAK Inc. the 2nd Annual National Hazing Symposium brought together authors, educators, spokespersons, hazing victims, hazing experts, as well as students from Greek life, athletics, and clubs. The Gordie Bailey Leadership Forum

This leadership forum was held on the one year anniversary of Gordie's death at The University of Colorado. Attendees included former members of Gordie's fraternity, leaders from fraternities, sororities, and other student groups as well as administrators. Over 200 people gathered to hear key speakers including Michael Lanahan discuss the dangers of the drinking environment at UC Boulder and the consequences of hazing.
