Over the past years, it has become very clear; we cannot solve the nation’s alcohol and hazing issues by ourselves.  Knowing this, we have established partnerships with like-minded organizations to achieve our mission.

Center for Alcohol and Substance Education at the University of Virginia

As a unit of the University of Virginia’s Office of the Dean of Students, CASE supports the mission of the University by fostering community to promote student learning, growth, and citizenship. CASE supports peer education and provides presentations and consultation in order to increase knowledge of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug issues, and decrease the negative consequences associated with high-risk drinking and illegal drug use among U.Va. students.

Programs include:

Choices Alcohol and Drug Education Programs - These online alcohol and drug education programs hosted by 3rd Millennium Classrooms and coordinated by CASE, focus on prevention and reducing risk for alcohol and drug related health and impairment problems, not just for the college years, but for a lifetime.

First Aid for Intoxicated People - Education on helping out a friend who has had too much to drink.

Self Assessment Tools - AlcoholScreening.org - If you consume alcoholic beverages, it's important to know whether your drinking patterns are safe, risky or harmful. This screening will take only a few minutes, and will generate personalized results. DrugScreening.org - This self-screening tool is designed to help adults assess their own drug use, and find out their likely risk level for experiencing negative consequences.

National Study of Student Hazing - University of Maine

The most comprehensive study of hazing to date and includes survey responses from more than 11,000 undergraduate students at 53 colleges and universities in different regions of the U.S. and interviews with more than 300 students and staff at 18 of these campuses. The following is a snapshot of the initial findings from this cutting edge study.

  • More than half of college students involved in clubs, teams, and organizations experience hazing.
  • Hazing occurs across a range of student groups. Students affiliated with varsity athletics and social fraternities and sororities are most likely to experience hazing. Seven out of 10 students report they experienced at least one hazing behavior to join or maintain membership on the team or in a social Greek-letter organization.
  • A leading hazing behavior across nearly all student organizations and teams is participation in drinking games.
